Public chatbots are not an operating layer
Public assistants are useful for general reasoning, drafting, and research. They are not the same as a controlled company knowledge system.
A private RAG system connects approved documents, records, and operational context to an assistant layer that can answer with citations, access rules, and defined boundaries.

A private retrieval system should support permission-aware access, document freshness, user roles, audit trails, and a fallback path when the answer is uncertain.

Where private RAG wins first
The best first domains are knowledge-heavy, repetitive, and expensive when handled manually. Examples include SOPs, HR policies, service records, procurement documents, compliance references, sales playbooks, and customer histories.
The result should be more than an answer box. It should create action: a draft, a decision note, an exception report, a next-step workflow, or an executive brief.
